Safe Candlelight?
Don't worry, the flame has not gone out of romance but I've decided that this week’s find is a year round must.
Candle Impressions flameless candles caught my attention at The Weathered Gate in St Jacobs. The battery operated candle looks and feels just like a regular candle: made of real vanilla scented wax with a perfect glow and flicker. Honest! And I am really impressed by the amazing battery life. The thing that makes this brand stand out from other flameless options is the glow. Each candle regardless of shape or size looks and offers an ambience to a room of a real flame burning candle. And remember flameless translates into dripless, worry-free, no soot or melting wax. Essentially once you make the initial purchase your candle will last forever.
Some candle pillars offer a resetable timer: set the time you want the candles to automatically turn on and they will power down automatically five hours later. Great for high wall sconces, lanterns indoors or outdoors. With up to 700 hours of battery life you will be hard pressed to find a better product. Shop owners at The Weathered Gate stated that all designs sell well and often sell out. My favourite is the 8”, 10” and 12” classic round pillars with built-in timer combination. However there are a variety of styles from contemporary to square pillars and votives to choose from.
Rekindling A New Flame
I've tried other “flameless” candle options; they were OK but I always seemed to fall back on traditional wicked candles. I missed the real flame. However the Candle Impressions technology is unique. I am now sold and have started to replace the candles in my home. Aside from the decorative tributes what should really sell you on these candles is their safety. With no flame Candle Impression’s products do not heat up. Use them worry-free around pets, children, walls and breezy doorways.
Eliminate the risk of fire…
Coincidentally after I had completed my column for the week I was informed that it is currently fire prevention week. Tuesday afternoon I volunteered on my daughter’s fire safety themed school trip to the Safety Village. Did you know that most fires happen in residential homes? And despite fire awareness programs the incidents of fire due to candles has actually tripled in the last five years? Product packages telling us that flameless candles are safe is informative, but the statistics delivered by a local fire fighter really hit home.
Initially I decided to feature the flameless candles because I thought they were a good idea and they actually looked great. After the field trip I could not be more sold on replacing my traditional candles with the flameless option.
By adding Candle Impressions candles to your home, or purchasing for holiday gift-giving you are on the road towards a safer, beautiful living experience. We could all use a little more worry-free relaxation time
– wouldn’t you agree?

Flameless Candles, the Neat, Safe, Pleasing, Permanent Alternative to Fire
By Steve Kruschen ©2007 All Rights Reserved
February 1, 2007 – On display from March 11 – 13 in Chicago at the International Home and Housewares Show is something really innovative – flameless candles!
I couldn’t wait for the show, so I asked to see these battery-operated flameless candles from a Canadian company called Candle Impressions. Their candles, from about $13 to about $30, don’t drip, last forever, are safe wherever they are used and where you would or should never use a candle with a flame. They’re made of real wax with an electronic heart. The light comes from LED technology and a patented circuit that simulates the flicker of the real thing.
I placed a couple of them in our bedroom, one nine-inch, one six-inch, and waited to see the reaction of the long-suffering Mrs. Gadget. She was fooled at first. Then she was impressed. Sold! These flameless candles have a very high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
It’s all good with no downside. The batteries last a very long time, in small models using AA cells around 100 hours, to more than 300 hours in models using a pair of alkaline C batteries.
How many hours will a comparable-sized real candle burn? Certainly nowhere near as many as just one of these on one set of batteries. And remember the other benefits, no soot, no danger, they never wear out, they are totally safe.
To me, it’s a slam dunk. These things are brilliant! Would you leave a real candle burning when you leave your house or apartment? I hope not! Go ahead and leave these “on” with no danger, yet with the same ambience when you return.
I think you get it. Now, get them! Worry-free candles, from Candle Impressions.
Get them, but not all the different types, at Bed Bath and Beyond and at The Sharper Image, and from these stores. For more information, contact the company at http://www.candleimpressions.net. Check out all their innovative designs, both scented and unscented.

Dorm Room Fire Group
The adjacent picture (Picture not available) shows a display of candles in North Carolina's Campus. You may think you just read something wrong because it would be anathema to have a candle vendor hawking their goods at a Campus Fire Safety Conference.
After all candles can be public enemy number one in student housing. Many college fire safety officers have strict rules prohibiting the use of candles in dorm rooms. Don Wood (Boston Colleges Fire Safety Officer) explains that you can be fined $100 for having an unused candle and $200 if the wick was used. If there is a subsequent offense you will be expelled from BC Campus Housing. At first glance The Forum 8 attendees appeared shocked to see such a display but a discrete little sign tips off many of the unsuspecting college fire safety officers to the fact that these candles are a flameless version of the real thing.
Fortunately, the new flameless candles have all the warm appeal minus the danger associated with the age old illuminating devise.

Avoiding the danger of burning candles
CONSIDER TRYING FLAMELESS VARIETY
By Gary Dymski
Newsday
While candles can create a festive atmosphere, they also cause about 18,000 fires a year. During the holidays, candle use is up; so is the risk of fire.
"People really need to be careful with candles,'' says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. "The rules are pretty basic, but the biggest thing is to never leave a lit candle unattended.''
One way to avoid the risk of fire from candles is to purchase ``flameless'' candles. Powered by batteries and made of wax, the candles flicker and give off a variety of scents.

Incredible "flameless candles"! Huh? How can a flickering candle be flameless? Okay, I'll explain. This is a new product from Candle Impressions and the secret is that they're battery-operated. They look incredibly real because they're made from real scented wax, and they flicker like a real flame. So even though you get the great relaxing look of a real candle you don't have to worry about having to clean up hot wax or the danger of a real flame. You don't even have to worry about smoke when you put them out. To put these candles out you just click a switch. Ideal for romantic evenings but they'll also come in handy during a power outage. And since they're unaffected by wind you can use them outdoors as well. They're powered by two "C" batteries (not included, of course) and Candle Impressions says they'll flicker for at least 300 hours before the batteries need to be replaced. Under $40 each, cheaper if you buy more than one Available in a wide variety of designs.

Flameless flicker
This is the time of year when candles are a part of so many holiday celebrations, from Chanukah to Kwanzaa. It's also the time of year when traditionalist decorate with candles, risking fires when dry greenery, paper or some other combustible material can come in contact with a flame.
Instead of remembering to blow out the candles when you leave the room, you might try one that switches off instead.
Candle Impressions are flameless real wax candles that come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors to fit numerous decorating needs. Instead of a flame, there's a flickering little light embedded inside the candle. It looked realistic enough to fool our resident candle enthusiast and comes in vanilla scent or unscented.
While they wouldn't work in celebrations where there is significance in the lighting of candles, these, which require two C-cell batteries for about 700 hours of light, could be a safer bet for the mantel or centerpiece. Prices start at $12.99 at Bed, Bath and Beyond and Sharper Image.

FLAMELESS CANDLES ARE HOT
Take all the positive things about candles - decorator looks, delicious scents and soft, flickering light - and subtract the negative things - messy wax drips, soot marks, uneven burning and dangerous open flames - and you're left with flameless candles, one of the more popular innovations hitting the stores and home shopping channels.
Flameless candles from Candle Impressions of Vancouver, British Columbia, are made of real vanilla-scented wax and resemble a traditional candle in every way, until you pick one up. Underneath is an on-off switch and a compartment for two batteries that silently power a flickering light effect that appears to come from a flame inside the body of the candle.
Since they are designed to flicker in random patterns, the candles look realistic and not artificial. The result is the warm ambience of candlelight that's safe enough to use around children and pets.
Unlike traditional candles, flameless candles allow for worry-free use on curtained windowsills, or accessorized with fabric ribbons, branches, wreath garlands and artificial snow. Flameless candles can also be used outdoors; try using one to light a jack-o'-lantern this year.
Most come in your choice of white or champagne and in a variety of sizes that can be grouped for a more dramatic effect. A pink model has a flower pattern in relief that would make a nice wedding or anniversary gift. A set of hefty 6-inch bookends would make a good last-minute gift to have on hand for office grab bags or for neighbors or service providers of either sex.
At $13 to $30, Candle Impressions' flameless candles cost a few dollars more than traditional candles, but they never burn down so they never need replacing; only the batteries need replacing. Smaller candles can remain "lit" for about 350 hours on two C-cell alkaline batteries; larger 8-, 10- and 12-inch pillar candles will run about twice as long on a pair of D-cell batteries.
The batteries do not warm the candle, which safely remain at room temperature, so the vanilla scent should last longer than traditional candles placed on warming units.
This product garnered a 2005 Product Innovation Award for Consumer Safety and a 2006 All-Star Salute to Home Safety Award from the Home Safety Council, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization that aims to prevent home-related injuries and deaths.

Rekindle a New Flame
The best way to set a mood is with lighting. And when the mood you want to set is a romantic one, the best lighting is candlelight. Candlelight is sexy, mysterious, women love it, and best of all, if she got to your place before you had a chance to clean, it'll hide a variety of imperfections. (Hence the reason strip clubs are so dark.)
Candles also come with a couple of inherent caveats: they're basically an open flame, so there's some places they shouldn't be placed. Like on tight shelves or near anything that would have a tendency to go up in flames, such as your collection of "vintage" porn magazines, or Britney Spears' career. Secondly, they drip. A lot. And, because of the Third Physical Law of Melted Wax, it tends to be on expensive, easily damaged, stuff.
Plus - and this is an important thing to consider - sometimes the romantic mood you set, along with a bottle of wine or two kicking in, may cause you to become otherwise occupied. Through the night. Forgetting there are a half-dozen candles burning. And having the fire department hack their way through your front door in the middle of the night tends to put a damper on things. (Tip: your hose should be the only one in the house that night.)
Technology has an answer: Flameless candles. They're made of real wax. They have a vanilla scent. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. And they take two C batteries.
I have a couple from Candle Impressions' line of patented flameless candles, and they look exactly like real flickering candles. Except they don't drip, they burn for hundreds of hours, and they never get hot. You wouldn't be able to tell they weren't real candles unless you looked at the "wick" and saw there was no flame. That, and the on/off switch on the bottom.
So get a few and keep the mood going. All night.

Candle Impressions
Okay, I admit the whole idea of this felt a little odd. I am a lover of candlelight, but I enjoy the real thing and a "flameless" candle just felt strange. I wanted to check them out though because I appreciated the fact that they are totally safe around children and pets, never mind being a lot cleaner than traditional candles. These are definitely a great gift for a friend with little ones or furry ones. Candle Impressions have a light (honest... very mellow and pleasant) vanilla scent, come in lots of shapes and sizes, and they look real when you flick them on after adding batteries. They flicker and glow and truly add atmosphere. Just don’t look at them from above... the wick with no flame is a dead give-away! They are priced right at $12-30, and you can find them at retailers nationwide or go to www.candleimpressions.net

A Safer Glow
If you want to avoid the hazard of an open flame and dripping wax, check out Northern International's Candle Impressions Flameless Candle ($15; available at Lowe's, True Serve, Home Depot and other major retailers; 888-644-4373). The candle is battery-operated (it takes two C's), so it flickers like the real thing. Bonus: a great vanilla scent.
